Harrogate Bus Station | Centrica & Transdev.

Challenge.

We needed to provide Harrogate bus station with electric bus charging stations which would be the first of its kind in the UK to utilise ‘opportunity charging’. Our role included the design and installation of a new power supply from the point of connection granted by the DNO. Secondly, to design, install and commission a new substation.

Solution.

Pantographs had to be craned into position, with the work taking place at night so the live bus station wasn’t disrupted. Whilst constructing the foundations, duct work and diverting the existing drainage for the pole chargers needed to be limited to 2 bus bays at any one time.

We worked with the client’s architect to ensure that the feasibility of the plans would work, which included carrying out a ground penetrating radar survey and modifying the design to ensure that all infrastructure could be adequately accommodated within the tight area provided by the client.

Outcome.

A change in the specification resulted in budget challenges. We worked with our supply chain and introduced an IDNO to simplify the substation design, bringing the costs back to below the budget.
